Book Review: Remembering Lauren

Cover_mockup_2revMysteries are a wonderful escape from the world. Life is so complex that our everyday problems rarely resolve themselves as neatly as they do in fiction. That charm should not be underestimated.

Remembering Lauren is the first novel by police officer turned author Misha Jordan. The story features Nikki Freeman, a vet tech trying to escape a violent past. In her attempt to flee from the big city, she crosses paths with a small town predator when she tries to find a missing woman. Misha’s experience as a native Floridian and police officer makes each detail come alive.

Remembering Lauren is dark and gripping story. Like a rich chocolate torte, it is best consumed in small bites so each mouthful can be savored. It was so gripping that I had to keep putting it down and reminding myself it was just a story. Even with frequent respites, like a good dessert, it was over too quickly.

If you are a fan of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Criminal Minds, or Law & Order SVU, then there is a good chance you will enjoy Remembering Lauren. It has that same brooding feeling, enhanced by frequent rain storms. The novel doesn’t achieve the same literary heights as a Rex Stout or Laurent Binet, but does feel more gritty and real than more traditional mystery novels.

If you are looking for a quick-paced escape this weekend, pick up Remembering Lauren and keep your eye out for Misha Jordan’s next novel. We look forward to more mysteries from this budding young author.
